My short documentary Sence prihodnosti (Shadows of the Future) premiered at the Janez Trdina Cultural Centre. It grew out of my involvement in the Muslim Cultural Centre Ljubljana’s project “Srebrenica: 8,372 Living Memories”, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
Armin Kuduzović and I recorded the footage during visits to Prijedor and Srebrenica, and I subsequently worked with Jurij Moškon to shape it into a film. It brings together survivors’ testimonies, accounts of the search for and identification of victims, and the perspective of a younger generation growing up with the consequences of war.
Above all, I wanted to listen and give people the space to tell their stories. The film also explores how profoundly the past can shape the lives of those born long after the events themselves.
The screening was followed by a discussion. I am grateful to everyone who entrusted me with their stories, and to the cultural centre’s team for helping bring them to an audience in Novo mesto.
